Thomas Jackson MartinChicago Daily Tribune Saturday August 16,1952 2 Friends See Boy, 5, Fall to Death in River Thomas Martin, 5, of 2642 H. Hoyne Ave., drowned last night in the north branch of the Chicago River after he fell from a ledge on the north end of the Damen Ave. bridge on which he had been playing. James Peterson, 9, of 2647 N. Hoyne Ave. and John Vanderbosch, 4, of 2669 N. Hoyne Ave., with whom Martin was playing, were unable to summon help in time to save Martin. A coast guard boat from the Old Chicago Station began a search for the body.
Chicago Daily Tribune Monday August 18 1952 Drowns in Lake While Paddling in Banned Area Raymond Toddlebin, 15, of 1426 Lill Ave. was drowned yesterday when he slipped from an inner tube while swimming in a restricted area of Lake Michigan 300 feet off shore at Fullerton Ave. North Park police said Toddlebin was swimming alone past several signs prohibiting swimming when he slipped from the tube and disappeared. Guards using grappling hooks recovered his body an hour and a half later. Joseph Brown, 32, of 8100 McVickers Ave., was drowned yesterday while swimming in third Lake, near Grayslake, Lake County. The body of Thomas Martin, 5, of 2642 N. Hoyne Ave., who was drowned Friday when he fell into the north branch of the Chicago River from a ledge on the north end of the Damen Ave. bridge, was recovered from the river yesterday by police.
